Learning Without Limits Via Computer Networks

Starr Roxanne Hiltz
New Jersey Institute of Technology

The Virtual Classroom, an innovative program originating at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, brings the university into the homes and workplaces of students through the use of computers. Specially designed computer softerware electronically links the Virtual Classroom student to his/her professors and classmates. Using a microcomputer, a telephone, and a modem, the student attends lectures, takes tests, receives feedback from professor, participates in discussions and undertakes team projects with fellow students. This computer-mediated environment supports a collaborative learning process that can exceed that of the traditional classroom, a process in which students and instructors are actively involved in creating and carrying out learning activities together.

This volume discusses and analyzes every aspect of the Virtual Classroom, including its goals and methods, software tools, theoretical framework, teaching strategies for professors in a Virtual Classroom. The book also explores the possibilities for using this technology to expand educational opportunities in the next century.
