“Items” and Scales
- Usually, a complete scale consists of four or more items (questions) that all measure different aspects of the variable. A respondent's answers to the various items can be added together to produce finer distinctions in measurement than any one question is likely to.
- The set of items is often preceeded in the questionnaire with a section title, and brief instructions about how to respond to the scale items.
