ATTENDANCE and CLASS POLICIES

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class.  Attendance is mandatory for all freshmen and sophomore classes.

The NJIT Honor Code will be upheld and violations will be brought to the immediate attention of the Dean o Students.

Students will be consulted with by the instructor and must agree to any modifications or deviations from the syllabus throughout the course of the semester.

EXAMS and QUIZZES

Weekly quizzes will comprise 50% of your overall grade.  The mid-term exam and the final exam will comprise the other 50%.

NO make-up exams unless you have documented verification for a valid absence; i.e.; serious illness, accident, death in family, or any other extenuating circumstance that may be considered a valid reason for missing the exam.  Make-up exams are given in special cases only and at the discretion of the instructor.

HOMEWORK (Also see Homework Instructions below)

Problems on the Course Outline sheet are to be solved and turned in one week following the assignment.  Selected homework problems will be collected during the Recitation. Homework will be checked and returned the following week. To obtain credit, you must submit the work on time and in the proper form.  Each homework problem is worth 10 points.  Missing homework will receive minus credit.  At least 75% of the homework must be submitted on time, and correct, to receive a passing grade in the course. No late homework will be accepted. 

 

HOMEWORK INSTRUCTIONS

The following are to be observed when handing in homework for grading. Failure to do so may result in significant deductions in the homework grade:

  1. Use 5-square per inch National Computation or engineering grid pad paper ONLY (sold at the NJIT Bookstore and other office supply stores). The proper form consists of doing the problems on one side of 8-1/2 x 11 pad paper
  2. On the top of each page, in the space provided, LETTER your name (Last Name, First Name), course and section, and problem number.  Put the problem # in the upper right corner of the paper.
  3. The problems must be presented in numerical order as assigned. One problem per page.   Write on one side of the sheet only. Lettering and numbers are to be neat, clear and legible.
  4. Draw neat, clear F.B.D’s as required. Use a straight edge or other drawing instruments as needed.
  5. Box in the final answer.
  6. Staple the problems in proper numerical order with a single staple in the upper left hand corner.

TUTORIAL HELP at 423 Colton Hall     

Tutorial hours will be announced in class and the schedule will be emailed to you. There will be tutoring sessions scheduled a few different times during the week. Students with difficulties are encouraged to go during the tutorial hours.  The schedule will be posted outside 423-Colton Hall

The grade ranges are:

    A   = 88 to 100

C = 65 to 69

    B+ = 82 to 87

D = 60 to 64

    B   = 76 to 81

F = 59 or less

    C+ = 70 to 75

    W = Voluntary before deadline (school schedule)

    Incomplete = given in rare instances where the student is unable to attend or otherwise do the work of the course due to illness, etc. The grade must be made up in the next semester by completing all of the missed work.

 

Students must earn a C or better in this course to register for Strength of Materials, MECH 237.
