Week
Topic
1
Getting acquainted with the various drawing instruments. Using two triangles as a pair for parallel and perpendicular lines.
Read: (T) Ch. 1 and Ch. 2 Proper lettering for the professional look; use of the Ames lettering guide.
Read: (T) Ch. 4, especially Sections 4.16 and 4.17.
HW: Use the Ames lettering guide and refer to the instructions in the insert.
Use 1A paper, use 4H or 3H lead to draw light guide lines; use 2H or HB pencil and print the assignment per Drawing 4.3 or 4.4.2
Scales for Dimensioning and Sizing. Learning to read scales to eliminate the need for algebraic conversions of measurements. Measurements are read directly from the various engineers' or architects' scales.
Read: (T) Ch. 2, Sections 2.24 - 2.32.
Class: Drawing 2.2 (Instructor may use pages 54 & 55 from Reference workbook.)Geometric Construction. Using plane geometry concepts to understand how lines and angles blend.
Read: (T) Ch. 5, Sections 5.1 - 5.43.
Class: (T) Figures 5.10, 5.15, 5.22, 5.35,.5.36, 5.38, 5.41
HW: (T) Prob. 5.4, 5.7, 5.20, 5.27, 5.31, Fig. 5.69 or Fig. 5.753
Sketching three-dimensional, isometric forms. Freehand sketching can be used for this section to practice proper orientation and proportions of shapes. Plain bond paper or special isometric grid paper can be used for these exercises.
Read: (T) Ch. 6, Sections 6.1 - 6.18.
Class: (T) Figures 6.23, 6.26, 6.28. Class exercise: Figure 6.53, choice(s).
HW: (T) Figure 6.53, reproduce the isometric form selected by your instructor.4
Multiviews for three dimensional viewing. Revolving the object for different perspective views. Proper layout of orthographic views.
Read: (T) Ch. 6, Sections 6.19 - 6.31.
Class: (T) Figure 6.52 or 6.53, select some forms for multiviews.
HW: (T) Figure 6.53, construct the multiview for the same isometric done last week.Orthographic projections. Using the glass box concept and revolving an object to see the principle views in orthographic layout for drafting and model making. Review the seven principle planes for description and references.
Read:&(T) Ch. 7
Class: (T) Fig. 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.16, 7.43, 7.46
HW: (T) Fig. 7.57, Fig. 7.635
Using a CAD system. Read: Ch. 8 Exam #1. Material will include proper lettering, scales for dimensioning, concepts in geometric construction, sketching, and
multiview projections.6
Introduction to AutoCAD (evening class) or Pro/ENGINEER (day class).
Class to meet in the PC lab for AutoCAD or the UNIX lab for Pro/ENGINEER.
Read introductory chapters in relevant CAD textbook.
Your instructor will assign the exercises from either CAD textbook.7
Dimensioning. Necessary for size and location, for design, function, and machineability. This chapter has many good
pictorials of Dos and Donts.
Read: (T) Ch. 13, Sections13.1 - 13.22.
Class: Fig. 13.56, #3 or #4, #7 or #8.
HW: Fig. 13.57, #28 Dimensioning, continued.
Read: (T) Ch. 13, Sections 13.23 - 13.43.
Class: (T) Review Fig. 13.32, 13.36, 13.37, 13.41, 13.43, and 13.54.
Study Section 13.43 Dos and Donts of Dimensioning.Tolerancing. Necessary for allowances in the fit of mating parts, as well as compromising dimensions for machining, casting or molding.
Read: (T) Ch. 14, Sections 14.1 - 14.10.9 Production Drawings.
Read: (T) Ch. 16, Sections 16.10 - 16.27.
Class: to be announced.
HW: Project to be assigned by instructor. Allow two weeks for this assignment.10 Exam #2. Material to include orthographic projections with dimensions and tolerances. Questions on CAD systems and menu selections will also be included. Graphs. Engineering method for showing all the facts on one piece of paper.
Methods to analyze data. Rectangular coordinate and log paper to be discussed.
Read: (T) Ch. 23, Sections 23.1 - 23.13.11 Piping symbols and layouts. Electrical symbols and diagrams.
