Dear HRM 303 (Human Resource Management) Student,

This is your welcome to the HRM 303 DL course in Human Resource Management. If this is a new way for you to take a course,  this letter will provide you with information to help make DL a successful experience.  If you are an old hand at DL courses, there still may be useful information here.

First, a time to double check your registration.  HRM 303 is an elective course in the BS in Management curriculum.  It does not fill the requirement for HRM 301 – Organizational Behavior which is the required course.  I welcome you into HRM 303 but please be certain this is the course you want to be in.

My role in this course is as your Instructor but with a twist. The lectures (now videostreamed via iTunes) were originally video tapes and were created before a live class. The textbook provides background information to further understand the tapes and to extend your learning beyond the lectures. The text is Raymond Noe, John Hollenbeck, Barry Gerhart, & Patrick Wright, 2007. Fundamentals of Human Resource Managment, 2nd Edition, McGraw Hill. The ISBN is 007325794X. It is is available from the NJIT bookstore or any other online book vendor. The lectures are still available in video tape format in the NJIT Library for use in the Library.

Lectures are now available for download at http://itunes.njit.edu

Instructions for downloading lectures:

1. The course materials this semester will be available from http://itunes.njit.edu .

2. Before logging in you should make sure that you have Apple's iTunes software installed on your computer (this is available for free from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ).   Additional information is at  http://itunes.njit.edu/students.php

3. Click on the “NJIT Students” link to login.

4. This will open a new page where you will need to enter your UCID login and password.

5. After clicking “Submit”, you browser will ask you to confirm that you want to open an external application (iTunes) and may ask you to confirm that you have iTunes installed on your computer.

6. iTunes will open and take you to NJIT on iTunes U. After iTunes opens scroll down to NJIT Open Courseware. You will see HRM 303/606 Human Resource Management Listed. Click on the icon to download the lectures.

Please note: It may a minute for iTunes to initially load.

All course materials downloaded from NJIT on iTunes U are free.

Beyond the text and the tapes is the requirement of using the WebCT.  This is asynchronous courseware with conferencing that allows for discussion.  There will be a course specifically devoted to our HRM 303 section.  It is our virtual space to discuss class issues and current issues that pertain to human resource management.  Many assignments will be completed using the WebCT.  We will also be using the chat feature in WebCT five times during the semester.  The chat is intended as an online office hour or a time to just discuss anything interesting in the world the has some relevance for Human Resource Management. According to the  the distance learning office, when you register for HRM303-451 you are automatically registered into WebCT. Your student login and password will automatically be set to their NJIT Campus Directory login/password . The first thing you need to do to be able to get into WebCT is to go to http://webct.njit.edu/. Click on student and then follow instructions. It is not as complicated as it sounds once you see how the system works.

So what do I do?   As your instructor, I am available to discuss issues that you want to talk about, to answer questions that are raised but not answered by the tapes or text, and to lead discussion on the computer conference.   My background is that of an Industrial-Organizational Psychologist and I have been in this teaching business at NJIT for over 30 years.

A course syllabus with assignments and notes is posted on this homepage. Lecture outlines are on my homepage: http://eies.njit.edu/~rotter/.    These documents are your guide for the course and should be referred to frequently. The assignment list guides you in reading and watching.  Keeping up with all of this is the first step in being successful. In fact, your very first assignment is to read through the Course Syllabus and Assignments NOW.  If anything in the Syllabus or Calendar presents a difficulty for you or if anything is confusing to you, the time to contact me is also NOW.  My homepage also has an announcement box which is updated at least weekly during the semester.  You also need to check that frequently.

I look forward to this course with you.

Sincerely

Dr. Naomi Rotter, Professor (rotter@njit.edu)
